By now you’re all pretty familiar with my love of Central Park. It really is a happy medium for city-loving tree-huggers like me. Just the other day, a friend and I decided to take our little ones to the Central Park Zoo and had a truly wonderful time. You would be surprised at all there is to experience in such a small zoo. Here were some of our favorite experiences:

The Sea Lion Pool: Those Sea Lions are some serious Show-offs! Not only do they enjoy doing their tricks during feeding time with their trainers (which happens at 11:30 a.m., 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.), but even when the show is over you can catch them hamming it up for onlookers. At one point, one of the Sea Lions came up through the water, basked against the rocks, and stared at us with a very knowing look, ”You love me; you know you do.”

The Rainforest: My son clamored to see the snakes from the moment we entered the zoo (boy-oh-boy will he be disappointed if he thinks that he will ever get one as a pet), and the Rainforest exhibit had plenty of snakes for the viewing. Large ones, small ones, even a pretty pink one with delicate gray streaks, all behind double-reinforced glass (thank you very much). There were also Piranhas and other Rainforest creatures to enjoy seeing as well at that exhibit.

The Polar Circle: On a hot day, the Polar Circle is the place to be. Seeing the giant Polar Bears is exciting; then you get to go inside the chilly Penguin and Puffin exhibit, which will surely be a refreshing moment after having the hot sun beat down on you. The great thing about the Penguins is that they are super friendly, and will swim right up to you on the other side of the glass to say hello! I personally delighted in putting my nose against the glass and having Penguin after Penguin come over and rub their beak on the other side of the glass. So amazing!

Besides these great favorites of ours, there are Monkeys and Red Pandas to be seen, Snow Leopards, many different kinds of birds, and the very best part, the Tisch Children’s Zoo. There is no way you could have gotten me to feed a Llama as a kid, but my brave little two and a half year old fed the Llama, some goats, and some sheep. After seeing him do it, I felt deeply ashamed of myself and mustered up the courage to feed them myself. The animals are so very gentle! They use their tiny little lips to pull in the food, never once using their teeth to get the food from people’s hands. It was truly a wonderful experience.

All in all, the Central Park Zoo is a great way to spend a few hours with the family. You’ll be amazed at all you can experience in such a small zoo, and the memories will last for a long, long time.

Have you ever walked through a park early in the morning and seen a group of people in a meditative state performing slow, beautifully graceful movements in unison? If you have, then what you were witnessing was the ancient Chinese martial arts form, Tai Chi Chuan, or Tai Chi for short. There are Tai Chi studios in NYC, almost as ubiquitous as the yoga studio these days, as well as parks and gardens that offer classes outdoors, which tends to be the more traditional way that it is practiced. Here is a short list of venues, both indoors and out, that offer classes if you want to learn this practice. You could also just go to the parks and watch. While it might not be as lovely as watching tai chi practioners on the beach at sunset, there is something very calm and soothing about seeing this beautiful art form in practice – even in a park in New York City.

For as long as they have been making movies, New York City has been the place to shoot them. Many of the locations of key scenes in movies filmed on the streets of New York City can be visited today, and here is just a very small listing of several to choose from:

Stand over the famous “Marilyn Monroe subway grate”: In Manhattan on 52nd Street and Lexington Avenue, you will find the subway grate that Marilyn Monroe stood over in that fabulous white halter dress from the movie The Seven Year Itch.

Visit the Ghostbusters Fire Station: Hook and Ladder 8, located at 14 North Moore Street and Varick Street, is where you can visit the Fire Station that housed the ghost-busting team in the now classic 80′s flick.

Fake an orgasm like Meg Ryan did at Katz’s Delicatessen: Okay, so you might not want to actually fake a full-blown orgasm in the middle of the restaurant, but you can at least have fun remembering that hilarious scene from When Harry Met Sally while knoshing on classic NYC deli fare. 205 E. Houston and Ludlow Street.

Have a slice of pizza at Joe’s Pizza from Spiderman 2: Tobey Maguire’s character lost his job as the pizza delivery boy there but the deliciousness (and inexpensiveness) of their pizza slices is enough to forgive them for giving Spiderman the boot. 7 Carmine Street at Bleecker Street.

Mulberry Street Bar: This site has hosted quite a few shoots, and all of them mafia related. Donnie Brasco, The Godfather III and even The Sopranos all had scenes filmed in this classic Little Italy fixture. 176 1/2 Mulberry Street.

New York Public Library Main Branch: The Main Branch is the “big gun” of NYC film location sites, boasting quite a long list of movies that have filmed either inside or directly in front of its location at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street. The list of movies that were filmed there includes The Wiz, Ghostbusters, Spiderman, The Day After Tomorrow, Sex and the City, and Breakfast at Tiffany’s among others.

FAO Schwartz Toy Store: Located at Fifth Avenue and 58th Street, this toy store was featured in Home Alone, but is perhaps most well known for the scene in BIG when Tom Hanks and Robert Loggia play “Chopsticks” and “Heart and Soul” on the huge floor piano there.

Lincoln Center, The Metropolitan Opera House: This is where Cher met Nicholas Cage for his dream date at the Met in Moonstruck. Broadway between 63rd and 64th Streets.

The Empire State Building: Go to the observation deck and relive the moment when Meg Ryan finally meets Tom Hanks in Sleepless In Seattle. 350 Fifth Avenue at 34th Street.

South Street Seaport: This is where Godzilla first steps out of the East River when he goes on his rampage in the 1998 version of Godzilla. Fulton Street and East River.

If you are looking for the best possible photographer for your family portrait, I have just the person for you. Jade Albert is the leading commercial children’s photographer and has several child celebrity portraits in her portfolio. She also has a book she collaborated on with Cindy Crawford, and has directed a national television commercial for Target. None of these amazing accomplishments, however, is the reason why I share her with you.

Last summer I attended an event during which Jade was hired to do family portraits for the attendees. One look at my little guy and Jade said that he was beautiful enough to be a model and asked if I had thought of trying to make him one. The laughter that erupted from me stemmed from the fact that I knew what she was shortly about to find out: my kid doesn’t smile.

Sure, he’ll smile when he’s off camera, but the second a camera gets anywhere near that little face of his he immediately becomes somber. I warned Jade about this, but she told me that all kids were like that but that they warmed up eventually. She told me not to worry and we began the shoot. Now, I had noticed that she only had to take five or six pictures of the families before me to get “The One” great shot. Fifteen shots into our shoot, however, and Jade was starting to understand just what I meant when I told her that my kid just wasn’t model material. She looked up at me, clearly challenged by my little one’s poker face, but also resolved to get the best possible picture nonetheless.

Many shots, and an infinite amount of patience later, Jade captured the wonderful photo of us that you see above. Isn’t it amazing? So many people have told me that it looks like it could be on a magazine cover, or in a major print Ad. While I agree, I think it has less to do with my son and I and more to do with Jade’s mastery of both children and the camera. She was kind, patient, and determined. A true professional.

The good news for you is that while her career has comprised mostly of commercial photography, she has now decided to offer her services for family portraits as well. She is quite versatile, and is able do either studio portraits or photographs in a setting that is more natural to you and your family. If you want a truly memorable portrait, Jade’s your woman.

Growing up a born and bred New York City fashionista, I never went shopping at Thrift Stores. Just the thought of it would make my lip curl up self-righteously with the thought, “I don’t need to wear someone else’s clothes. Gross!” Here’s the thing though: some of these thrift shops have fabulous clothes in there – and I do mean fabulous! – for bargain basement prices, and many of them have never been worn. I went along with a friend to a few Thrift Shops because she wanted to hit up a couple of the city’s best ones, and while outwardly I seemed supportive of this endeavor, inwardly I was wondering how such a fashion diva like her could shop at places like that. So, we went into the first shop in our Thrift Shop Crawl and I eyed everything suspiciously. And then I found a pair of black DKNY pumps that had never been worn, in my size, being sold for $39.

My life will never be the same again.

While there really is nothing wrong with wearing gently used clothes after you have washed them yourself, the staggering amount of never used clothes with the original tags still on them being sold at Thrift Shops was beyond surprising. Why that should be surprising to me of all people remains to be understood, as I have a few items in my own closet that still have tags on them from past purchases. It just never dawned on me that these stores would have high-end, designer items for sale that had never been used because I always associated Thrift Shops with previously used garments. I’m sure many of you have made that assumption as well, so I’m happy to dispel that myth.

Below is a listing of some of the best Thrift Shops in New York City (the first shop listed is where I had my life-altering experience), although I suggest that you go into any of the ones you should happen across – you’ll likely be amazed at what you find in them, and with the economy the way it is why shouldn’t we get more for less? Also, if you see a fabulous pair of never-worn shoes in size 8, please drop me a line – if I like them I’ll get you a latte as a finder’s fee.

I have been putting fitness off for tomorrow since my son was born.

He just turned two in September.

Clearly, I can no longer use my toddler as an excuse for my unfit, overweight body, and odds are your excuses are getting pretty thin too (unlike our waistlines!). Nobody wants to pay for a gym membership they never actually use, and buying workout DVDs to use at home only works if you actually use them. I do know several people who have successfully become and stayed fit using a personal trainer but the private ones can get outrageously expensive. Luckily for us all, I tried New York Personal Training (NYPT).

NYPT, located at 12 West 21st Street, is pretty unique in that while it is similar to a gym, you do not pay for a gym membership, you pay for personal training sessions (although once you have completed each training session with your trainer you are free to stay and use the cardio machines for as long as you like afterwards). During these personal training sessions, a certified personal trainer works with you through either 30 or 60 minutes of training that is tailored-made to your specific needs. Due to time constraints I need a fast but powerful workout, and NYPT’s 30’ LeanMAXX program will do the trick. During my 30’ LeanMAXX session the trainer worked with me through quick but intense workouts, all targeting different parts of my body. I hadn’t worked out in a very long time so I was afraid that the intensity would be too much for me, but the trainer knew this and gave me exercises that were really challenging but not overwhelming. As a busy, working Mom, I don’t have a lot of time to devote to a fitness routine, so the 30’ LeanMAXX is going to be perfect for me. They also have other training programs that are geared specifically for Brides (and Grooms)-to-be, Pre and Post Natal Fitness (an upcoming event at NYPT hosted by The Pregnant New Yorker will focus on pregnancy and fitness), as well as many other needs and goals.

You also get the benefit of meeting with a nutritionist, who after writing down the foods you most love to eat, the foods you can’t stand eating, and adding lots of healthy alternatives, will then provide you with the food plan that will help you to achieve your fitness goal regardless of whether it is a great deal of weight loss or merely maintenance.

I found the best thing about this “gym” was that it wasn’t a gym at all. No super buff guys hanging around checking out the ladies; no aerobics queens in their tiny outfits prancing around on display. The clients at NYPT were there to workout – period. They were all so focused on their own fitness goals that not once did I notice anyone snickering at the chubby woman doing lunges (poorly). That alone is a huge selling point for people who are feeling at all self-conscious about working out in front of others.

Here’s the best part: when you call NYPT and mention that you learned of them through NY Metropolista, your first training session is free! It’s a great way to go check them out for yourselves – I’m pretty sure that you’re going to be as excited about the success you will achieve with their help as I was.

As a born and bred Manhattanite, I get a lot of pitiful looks from people who grew up in rural and suburban places. They ask me if I didn’t feel deprived of nature having grown up in this concrete jungle of mine, and always say, “No way!” While Central Park isn’t exactly Yosemite National Park, for us New Yorkers it is filled with the wonderful presence of nature, and has given many of us cherished moments amidst Summer’s lush green foliage, the earthy color palette of Fall leaves, the “Winter Wonderland” of snow-blanketed meadows, and the promise of Spring as the once-bare trees began to slowly awaken with the tiniest buds sprouting on their branches. If nowhere else on this island, Central Park allows you to truly feel the seasons in Manhattan in a way that only nature can bring. Some interesting facts to note about Central Park are that it encompasses 843 acres that include 136 acres of woodlands, 250 acres of lawns, and 150 acres of water dispersed throughout 7 bodies of water. Central Park’s six mile perimeter goes from Central Park West to Fifth Avenue and from 59th Street to 110th Street. Central Park is the first public park built in America after a competition for its design was held in 1858.

As for the wildlife that can be spotted here in the heart of Manhattan, down by the water right outside of the Ramble (a small patch of wilderness about half-way up the park from 73rd to 79th streets), you can find snowy egrets, green heron, and a multitude of ducks and other birds. At Turtle Pond (80th Street edge of the Great Lawn), you will find native Snapping Turtles that absolutely will bite you, so don’t for a second think that they are civilized New Yorkers. There are also hawks and falcons in Central Park feeding on the “lesser” wildlife like mice and squirrels. At night, if you are brave enough to hang around just after twilight, you might be lucky enough to see the Eastern Screech Owls who are just getting up for breakfast, as well as the bats who come out of their cosmopolitan caves within the huge boulders of Central Park to kindly rid us of mosquitoes and other pesky insects.

In addition to the lushness of its wilder environment, Central Park also has innumerable events to offer its visitors. The Central Park Zoo is a wonderful place for everyone (not just the kids). During the Summer months the Park sets up its annual SummerStage concert series at Rumsey Playfield, bringing some of the hottest acts around (from both past and present), to their stage for free concerts. And during the month of October there are many spooky Halloween events to choose from. From stuff to do specifically with the kids to walking tours, there’s never a lack of things to do in this little slice of nature in the heart of the Big Apple. You can even have your wedding held at the Conservatory Garden – a truly picturesque location to get married.

With all of this located right in our own backyard, you can see why I, and millions of other New Yorkers, don’t feel as if we’ve missed out on so much. We have the best of both worlds right within our reach – from the urban excitement of Times Square to the beautiful, natural wonder that is Central Park!

Before I was a mommy, I shamelessly used my Godchildren to live vicariously through during the holidays. I’d lie and say I was just excited for the children, but deep down inside I was happy that I got to get dressed up in a Halloween costume, or that I was walking over to the Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Center, or going to see the Christmas windows on Fifth Avenue, etc., etc. Now that I’m a mommy, I get to use my own child to thoroughly enjoy the holidays through, and boy-oh-boy am I excited!

This year, now that my little guy is two years old and super-aware of what is going on around him, I have a ton of options for exposing him to some Halloween revelry. I don’t want to overdo it because he is still very small and easily overwhelmed, but the options are there and it makes for an exciting time. Here are the three that I will be sure to make it to this year:

Boo at the Zoo

Every Saturday and Sunday in October, starting October 10th, the Bronx Zoo offers some spooky fun for you and your children! During the Boo at the Zoo weekends, you and your family can experience wildlife magic shows, pumpkin carving demonstrations, haunted hayrides, and this year, for the first time ever, the Bronx Zoo will have their first Haunted Safari. The best thing about these weekends is that if your children come to the Bronx Zoo wearing a wildlife costume, they will receive a free General Admission ticket when accompanied by an adult purchasing a full-priced admission ticket (limit one free child per paying adult). Good thing my little guy is going to be a Tiger this year. October 10 – 12, 18-18, 24-25, and October 31 – November 1 (Bronx Zoo, Bronx River Parkway at Fordham Road).

Baby Loves Disco’s Boo Baby Boo Halloween Party

Baby Loves Disco is one of my all-time favorite hangouts in NYC, and I’ve been taking my little guy to their parties since he was 7 months old. He always has so much fun, but the truth is, he is merely the excuse I use to go out and party to music I actually like listening to! While I adore Laurie Berkner, sometimes I miss shaking my tail feathers to classic 70s and 80s disco music, and Baby Loves Disco plays all the old goodies, and during their annual Halloween Party, Boo Baby Boo, you get to have fun with classics like the Monster Mash and Thriller as well. Best of all, you can dress up right along with your little guys and get in on the Halloween fun! Sunday, October 18th from 12noon to 3pm (Le Poisson Rouge, 158 Bleeker Street).

Washington Square Park’s Children’s Halloween Parade

The great thing about this parade is that you won’t have to explain to your little ones why the man in the bushy moustache and beard is wearing nothing but a bikini bottom and a floor-length golden wig. It is the MUCH more child-friendly version of Greenwich Village’s bawdy and extremely fun adult Halloween parade (that you should check out as well, just probably not with children under 11). On Halloween Day, October 31st, the Children’s Parade begins with costumed children gathering at 3:00pm by the arch at Washington Square North and then they begin marching at 3:30pm. After the parade, kids have an opportunity to get their faces painted, watch live entertainment, and of course, get lots and lots of treats!

So now, go forth, and make mischief of one kind or another!

On Location Tours offers several different kinds of New York City tours, but the Sex and the City tour called to me the loudest. My friends and I are total Sex and the City junkies; we own the fuzzy pink-covered Sex and the City complete series DVDs, the movie, and will be purchasing our tickets in advance for the second Sex and the City movie just as soon as they become available. We even choose which character we are most like (and no, mine isn’t Samantha – although sometimes I wish it were!).

So here I am, on the On Location Tours bus, ready to get my Sex and the City on, and the Tour Guide picks up the microphone and welcomes everyone. She is pretty, petite, and slightly raunchy, which was hilarious. The tour started across the street from the Plaza Hotel, and that one spot was the site of 2 or 3 scenes in the show. The great thing about the tour is that not only do you get to drive by some of the locations in the show and the movie, but after getting to see each location in real life, they play the clip where the location was in the show. So, after we first started to move away from Pulitzer Fountain in front of both the Plaza Hotel and the Paris Cinema, we got to see the scenes where both of those locations were shown in the actual series. It was so much fun because for a split second you got to feel like you were a part of it.

Most of the locations were “drive bys”, but we did get out and stop at four locations in particular. For the first location, you have to remember the name of the show – SEX and the City. No, we didn’t stop at a brothel; we stopped at The Pleasure Chest, the sex toy shop that the girls took Charlotte to so she could purchase her first sex toy. Around the corner was also a pizza shop, Two Boots, which was also featured in one of the episodes. I wondered how many people would opt to forgo the sex toy shop and demurely walk instead to the pizza shop, but from what I saw, pretty much everyone went into The Pleasure Chest, including yours truly. I was too insanely curious not to! In the end, the only purchase I made was a birthday card for my best friend, whose birthday just so happened to be on that upcoming Saturday. It was the perfect card, too.

We then moved on and saw more locations on our way to Buddakan, the fabulous bar and restaurant where Carrie and Big had their engagement party in the movie, and also where one of the movie’s New Year’s Eve scenes was filmed. The location is simply exquisite, a true feast for the eyes. We got the privilege of touring the location prior to it opening, which was a real treat because without the usual crowds you could really take in the aesthetic beauty of the décor.

We then drove by several other Sex and the City filming locations, and then stopped at our third stop, Magnolia Bakery in Greenwich Village. It was here that Carrie and Miranda sat outside on a bench in front of the bakery to eat their cupcakes, and where Carrie told Miranda that she had a crush. That crush turned out to be Aiden – and we all know the only one who got crushed in that relationship was Aiden, not Carrie. The Tour Guide gave us 20 minutes to do some quick shopping in the area, and with stores like Michael Kors, Juicy Couture, Coach and several others, everyone was happy to oblige. The best part of this stop was that everyone got a Magnolia Bakery cupcake of their very own and it was delish!

We moved on to get some other locations in while on our way to our fourth and final stop, a bar on Bleeker Street. In real life the bar’s name is O’Nieals, but on the show it was Scout – the bar that Steve and Aiden opened together. We each got to drink one fabulous Cosmo there before boarding the bus again to go back to our drop-off spot. I have to say, having a cocktail at 1:30 in the afternoon was one of the most decadently fun things I have done in a very long time – so Sex and the City fabulous!

All in all, the tour offers a very good time. I would have liked it if we could have gotten off the bus and made a couple more stops, but I do understand that in the interest of time in makes sense to only have four stops. As it was, the tour started at 11 am and didn’t end until 2:30 pm, but it was the fastest 3 and a half hours I’ve ever spent. It was entertaining, informative, slightly bawdy, and lots of fun. And as for a rating, I give it a full 4 Cosmos!

As a single mom, I don’t get out much. Well, let me restate that. As a single mom, I don’t get out much to grown-up events. I have an extremely full social life, except that it mostly revolves around kiddie concerts, toddler play dates and trips to the playground at the end of my block. Don’t get me wrong; I love being a mother. Taking my son out on the town in the Big Apple always means he will be exposed to the kinds of sights and sounds that will ensure a sophistication rarely seen in most two year olds elsewhere. Why, just today we were regaled with the sounds of African drums beating out the exciting rhythms of Brazilian Samba at the Brazilian Festival in Midtown Manhattan. Just two days ago we got to see a troupe of German street jugglers, and last week we just happened to run into a puppet show in front of a church. This city never leaves you with a shortage of wondrous experiences – and experiencing them with a child brings to them a new sense of wonder and appreciation. I love showing my beloved city to my son.

Going out with an adult every now and then, however, would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve decided that I will no longer allow myself to be a Mom-hermit. You know what I mean – you go out to tons of events for the little ones but as soon as someone invites you to an adult function you begin to mentally weigh the effort of getting into a dress that actually fits against the pleasure of vegging on the couch with a pint of ice cream and a good book (that doesn’t rhyme or have pictures in it), and the couch starts to win every time. Does that sound like you? Welcome; you are now a Mom-hermit.

Well, no more. Uh-uh. Not me. And not you either! We must rejoin society and reclaim the last bit of individuality we have left. Come on, you know you want to somewhere really deep inside. So to that end, I am going to put together a “Save the Mom-hermit Campaign”. This campaign involves getting my friends with more of a life than I have (i.e. all of them), to go out on the town with me to the most non-mom places in the city. My first stop? Buddakan. This restaurant not only has some of the swankiest décor in Manhattan, it has that fun, hip, Sex and the City feel that every woman-about-town wants once they’ve been given an evening pass by their warden…I mean, secured a babysitter for their darling children. For you married Moms, leave the hubby at home, grab the girls, and head over to Buddakan for some fabulous drinks, delicious food, and the absolute most important thing: fresh-out-of-GQ Magazine eye candy. Who cares if they probably won’t even notice that you’ve walked into the room – they are there to serve you. Well, at least they are in your fantasy when you get back home later on that night.

After leaving Buddakan, stroll on over a few blocks to the Gansevoort Hotel’s rooftop bar, Plunge. The drinks are yummy and the view of the New York City skyline is breath-taking. Exposed to all of this fabulousness, by the time you get home you will have most certainly kissed the Mom-hermit blues away. Even a month’s worth of Dora and Diego won’t be able to take away that heady feeling.

So, stay tuned, Ladies. The “Save a Mom-hermit Campaign” will be going to other New York City hot-spots – feel free to join us at the actual locations, or via my articles from the safety of your couch (it’s okay, I won’t tell).
