Corton: A Gastronomic Adventure

Recently, I went to Corton for a birthday celebration. What a treat! Corton is located in Tribeca where Montrachet (I loved that restaurant) used to be located. The restaurant is named for a wine region in Burgundy, France. The restaurant decor is extremely elegant yet understated. The chandelier lighting fixture in the middle of the room was just plain phenomenal and aded to the ambiance. The crowd was mix, not too old and not too young which I liked. The one thing I like about Drew Nieporent restaurants is that not only does do food well but more importantly you always feel welcome and not out of place. There is never that you are not good enough to eat here nonsense. The wait staff was a delight and was extremely attentive.
So what about the food. Wow!! Chef Paul Liebrandt provides you with a mouth watering and refined menu. There is a tasting menu for $140 but we opted for for the three course prix fixe which was $85 dollars per person.
For the appetizer, three of us chose the Foie Gras with Concord Grape, Chioggia Beet and Cataluña Spice. It sounds odd doesn’t it, concord grape and chioggia beets but the mixture was to die for. My friend ended “From the Garden” appetizer which I did not sample. Vegetables as an appetizer for me a snooze but she loved it.
For the main meal, again the majority went with the Painted Hills Beef. Just scrumptious, well seasoned and tender. Just incredible. So unbelievably well done. My friend ordered the cod which was also delicious.
We ordered all the desserts so we could sample each of them, macoun apple brioche tart, clafoutis, and cheese plate. Again, all were mouth watering and delightful. As if that wasn’t enough dessert, we were served a variety of chocolates and just when you thought there could be no more, they gave us each a parting gift of a little something to nosh on for breakfast. A little cake.
I know we ordered wine but since I was not the wine selector, I have no idea what we had but it was extremely delicious and reasonably priced.
If you have a chance and are looking for a treat, whether a romantic dinner, an important milestone or just plain want to hang out with friends, I would recommend Corton.
